PROJECT TITLE: -
ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION AND ITS IMPACT ON HUMAN HEALTH
THE ENVIRONMENT
The word 'Environment' commonly means the 'surroundings' we generally observe that every organism lives amidst various living and non living things, incidents and influences. The aggregate of all these forms the environment. The term environment encompasses many variables and parameters which determine the existence, survival and continuance of the organism. Though the simplest meaning of the term refers only to physical and biological surroundings, its broader meaning has much wider connotations and includes social, cultural, economic, political and intellectual activities of man which affect the physical and biological components. One may conveniently regard the environment as encompassing two basic facets the biological and the socio-cultural.
According to Section 2(a) of the Environmental Protection Act, 1986. 'Environment' includes:
(i) Water, air and land
(ii) The inter-relationship which exists among and between
(a) Water, air and land and
(b) Human beings, other living creatures, plants, micro-organisms and property.
Environment is the sum total of all conditions and influences that affect the development of all living things including man. It includes the positive and negative effects of human intervention and creation of assets or capital.
WHY SHOULD WE CARE FOR THE ENVIRONMENT?
With the passage of time, the human knowledge increased and man started making efforts for leading a more comfortable life. The progress of man from the primitive stage' to the technological stage, has brought him face to face with the global environmental problems of
(1) Ecological Decay
(2) Resource Depletion and
(3) Environmental Pollution
Some of the major environmental concerns facing the world today include- greenhouse effect and global warming, ozone depletion, urbanisation and its associated problems, degradation of land, air and water pollution, loss of biological diversity, large scale deforestation, depletion of natural resource, and disposal of waste.
Most of these environmental problems are the consequences of the changes brought about by man's intervention with the environment for the satisfaction of his basic needs as well as his pursuit of more ambitious go goals.
ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION
Environmental pollution is “the contamination of the physical and biological components of the earth/atmosphere system to such an extent that normal environmental processes are adversely affected”.
One of the greatest problems that the world is facing today is that of environmental pollution, increasing with every passing year and causing grave and irreparable damage to the earth. Environmental pollution consists of five basic types of pollution, namely, air, water, soil, noise and light.
Being a Teacher it is my pious duty to make my students and the society aware about the crisis of Environmental Pollution and its impact on our health.
PROJECT GOALS
The main goals behind this project is –
(1) To foster clear awareness of and concern about economic, social, political and ecological interdependence in urban and rural areas.
(2) To provide every person with opportunities to acquire the knowledge, values, attitudes, commitment and skills needed to protect and improve the environment.
(3) To create a new pattern of behaviour amongst individuals, groups and society as a whole towards the environment
OBJECTIVES
(1) Awareness: To help students, social groups and individuals acquire an awareness of and sensitivity to the total environment and its allied problems.
(2) Knowledge: To help students, social groups and individuals acquire a set of values and feelings of concern for the environment and the motivation for actively participating in environmental improvement and protection.
(3) Skills: To help students, social groups and individuals acquire the skills for identifying and solving environmental problems.
(4) Participation: To provide students, social groups and individuals with an opportunity to be actively involved at all levels in working towards the resolution of environmental problems.
JUSTIFICATION FOR THE PROJECT
The whole world is facing Environmental crisis like greenhouse effect, global warming, ozone depletion, air, water, land, noise, radioactive pollution and now our life, the whole earth is in danger. How we can get the environment pollution free and what action or care we can take regarding this. This is a question of life and death before us. Our country is also playing a leading role to make citizens aware of it. To carry forward the awareness and message world pollution prevention day is observed annually on 2nd of December every year. Every 5th of June is a day used by the United Nations to stimulate worldwide awareness of environmental issues and encourages political action.
So this way, we all should do and take necessary step to make world pollution free. In this regard this project is a step from my own side to make my students aware and take the responsibility to make Environment pollution free.
THE PLANNING AND ORIGIN OF THE PROJECT
As we all know that the subject of Environmental Problems is not confined to individual nations but global in nature. Growing urbanization, Rapid industrialization, Intensive cultivation. Population explosion and. the human desire to live a more comfortable life has degraded the ‘biosphere’. The story of the ever- increasing needs of materials an energy has transformed man from a 'dweller' of the environment in his early stage to its 'moulder'. In doing so., man has not only brought in unprecedented environmental crisis but has also heightened the possibility of his own extinction from the scene.
It matters first and foremost because it has negative impacts on crucial environmental services such as provision of clean air and clean water (and many others) without which life on Earth as we know it would not exist.
Story behind the origin of this Project work- I was very much eager to do a project work on Environmental Pollution and when I was at Computer Training Programme for Teachers organised and run by world’s no: 1 computer company Microsoft, my eagerness got a practical way to do so. I planned to go on for this project with my students and social groups.
Planning for this Project- I planned my project work to be done in two ways 1st (Room in Activity)To aware my students and social groups by personal interaction with the help of computer via internet by showing facts, videos and organising Seminar and 2nd (Room out Activity) visited some most polluted places in my locality with students group for micro observation and to make pollutants dissolve.
THE CURRICULUM CONTEXT OF THE PROJECT
The curriculum context of this project is mainly based on participatory and innovative approach. Some of them are -
FIELD VISIT: We visited to places of environmental concerns which provided us best opportunities as a means of observing and experiencing the real environment.
SITUATION ANALYSIS: This was another CURRICULUM CONTEXT which enabled the students to identify significant variables such as values, opinions and objects, which were interacting to create a situation.
ENVIRONMENTAL GAMES: Most students liked to play games. This technique was also a part of CURRICULUM CONTEXT which was used effectively to arouse interest and developmental skills in students.
FIELD SURVEY: Field survey was another effective technique to gather baseline information.
PROJECT WORK: Individuals or small groups of student undertook projects to collect useful information or investigated surroundings for specific environmental problems.
SITUATION ANALYSIS: This was another effective technique which enabled the students to identify significant variables such as values, opinions and objects, which were interacting to create a situation.
THE TECHNOLOGY CONTEXT
This particular project is available in two ways-
For non-computer users- Hard copy of project work in a printed form
For computer users- Soft copy of project work in a form of Power Point slide show and in the form of flash video with the help of Windows 7 Operating System, MS Office 2007, Bing search and windows live services. Mobile Technology is also used in it.
THE PROJECT MANAGEMENT
For getting some innovative and positive outcome of this project, the project management was based on Learner-centred activities such as learning-by-doing, field-study, experimentation, group discussions, games, role-playing, project-work, problem solving and inquiry approach were some of the active learning techniques which brought maximum learner participation.
Through active participation. Learning became internalised and became part of learner's cognitive structure. Learning became meaningful and permanent. Piaget's theory of cognitive development and Bruner's theory of concept formation support these beliefs.
Though varied methods has been used to teach same concept. Some concepts lend themselves better to certain methods than others. Study of water pollution for instance, lends itself better to field study and laboratory analysis. Plantation was another part, and it was one of the important parts of my Project work to make our world pollution free.
